In commemoration of the National Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Nazi German Concentration and Extermination Camps on 14 June 2017, a letter of intent was signed by the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Culture and National Heritage, Prof. Piotr Gliński and Zbigniew Starc- Governor of Oświęcim on the creation of a new museum facility in Oświęcim.
The Oświęcim District Council passed a resolution to establish, as of 1 September 2017, a local government cultural institution called the Remembrance Museum of Land of Oświęcim Residents (in organisation).
A year later, on the 78th anniversary of the first transport of Polish political prisoners from Tarnów to Auschwitz, on 14 June 2018, an agreement was signed on the joint running of the museum by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and the Oświęcim District.
